An abbey village at the bottom of a blind limestone valley, closed by 200 m cliffs, a cave and a mossy tufa waterfall. The belvedere on the plateau above gives the classic view.
Baume-les-Messieurs lies at the head of a “reculée”, a blind valley in the Jura limestone enclosed by sheer cliffs more than 200 m high. The Benedictine abbey is first mentioned in the 9th century and holds, among other things, a 16th-century Flemish altarpiece (5.60 m long, 4 m high). There is also a tufa cascade about 15 m high, fed by the underground River Dard, and caves with chambers 20 to 70 m high. The village is one of the most beautiful villages of France (“Plus Beaux Villages de France”).
Allow half a day. In summer the waterfall can carry less water and is most impressive after rain. You will find viewpoints over the reculée at Crançot and Granges-sur-Baume, among other places. There is free parking before the village, another car park near the abbey and one at the waterfall. The municipal campsite has 62 pitches.
