Hospices de Beaune

Beaune, France

History

A former charitable hospital in Burgundy, famous for its steep roof of glazed tiles in geometric patterns around a courtyard. Tour the old wards and kitchen, then stroll the wine town's ramparts.

The Hospices de Beaune, also known as the Hôtel-Dieu, were founded in 1443 by Chancellor Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins. At the end of the Hundred Years' War Beaune suffered hardship and hunger, and the hospital was meant to help the poor. In the inner courtyard, half-timbering, galleries and roofs of brightly glazed clay tiles in geometric patterns define the scene. The Hall of the Poor, the Grande Salle des Pôvres, is almost 50 m long, 14 m wide and 16 m high; the first patients were admitted on 1 January 1452.

You can also see the kitchen with its Gothic fireplace and an automatic spit-turner of 1698, a historic apothecary and Rogier van der Weyden's polyptych "The Last Judgement". Hospital care moved to a new building in 1971. Allow about an hour with an audio guide. The famous charity wine auction is held every year on the third Sunday in November. The museum is in the centre of Beaune.
