Stout Memorial Grove

Stout Memorial Grove in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is a flat loop of about half a mile (0.8 km) through old-growth coast redwoods beside the Smith River; plan on one to two hours. According to the National Park Service, the trees reach up to 300 feet (90 m). In 1929 it became the first dedicated grove in the park, which lies about 9 miles (15 km) east of Crescent City on Highway 199. A short spur trail drops about 20 feet (6 m) to the river and a gravel bar. The Smith River is considered California’s longest free-flowing major river.

Howland Hill Road is narrow, mostly unpaved and unsuitable for large vehicles, and there is no parking for RVs or trailers at the trailhead. In summer you can instead park at the campground day-use area and walk along the riverbank. A seasonal footbridge over the Smith River is usually in place from late June to late September, depending on water levels.
