A village clinging to a cliff with a tower on the rock and a long dark-grey beach below, made of old mine tailings. Several hundred steps lead down to the shore; parking is scarce on the D80.
Nonza lies on the west coast of Cap Corse, on the D80. Above the village, on a rock 167 m above sea level, stands the square tower that Pascal Paoli had built in 1760 on the site of a 12th-century castle. About 125 steps lead up to the viewing platform with all-round views. The church of Sainte-Julie dates from the 16th century and has an orange-pink façade.
The beach below consists of dark pebbles, whose colour comes from serpentinite residue from the Canari asbestos mine, which closed in 1965. The way down to it involves several hundred steps. Strong currents make swimming unsafe. Parking is limited: there are spaces along the road and small car parks in the village. Allow at least an hour for a walk around. The drive along the D80 is winding.
