Achensee
Pertisau, Austria
Tyrol's largest lake, long and deep blue between steep forested slopes, with swimming spots and boat trips from Pertisau. Take the shore path for a gentle walk, and visit on a weekday in summer to avoid the busiest crowds.
Lake Achensee lies at 929 m above sea level, north of Jenbach, and is the largest lake in Tyrol. It is around 9 km long, up to about 1.3 km wide and up to 133 m deep. The Karwendel range borders it to the west and the Brandenberg Alps to the east. Pertisau, Maurach and Achenkirch lie on its shores. Visibility in the water is usually up to ten metres, and it stays cool even in summer. Thanks to the wind, windsurfers and sailors are out on the lake, while motorboats are banned for nature conservation reasons. Excursion boats operate in summer.
From Jenbach the Achensee Railway, a historic steam rack railway about 7 km long, runs to Seespitz. If you arrive in Pertisau, you can stroll along the shore, take a boat or swim. Allow half a day for a boat trip and a walk along the shore. In high summer it is best to visit the bathing spots on a weekday, when it is usually quieter.
