Innsbruck Old Town

Innsbruck, Austria

History

The medieval centre of Innsbruck, with arcaded lanes, pastel houses and the Golden Roof balcony, with the Nordkette mountains rising behind. Leave the car in a garage and explore on foot, then take the cable car up for a wider view.

The heart of Innsbruck's old town is Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse with the Golden Roof, the city's landmark. The roof of the ornate oriel window consists of 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles. The late Gothic master builder Niklas Türing the Elder created the oriel around 1500 on the orders of Emperor Maximilian I. The reliefs show Maximilian with his two wives, Mary of Burgundy and Bianca Maria Sforza, as well as Moorish dancers. Today they are copies that replaced the originals in the 20th century; six of the originals can be seen in the Golden Roof Museum, which was redesigned in 2019.

The old town is known for its colourful façades and medieval character. The Hungerburg funicular leads up from the old town, and with the Nordkette cable cars you reach the Hafelekar at 2,334 m. Leave your vehicle in a car park and explore the lanes on foot; about two hours is realistic for the old town and museum.
