Route description

On Sifnos, start at Kastro, the medieval former capital, built around a hill in an oval ring of low houses, with ancient marbles, columns and sarcophagi set into the village. It was the main settlement until 1836. Allow time to wander the lanes and visit the archaeological museum. Ferries link the islands, so check the current timetable, as services are thinner outside summer.

Milos is the next island. At Klima, a tiny fishing hamlet on the Gulf of Milos, the syrmata are two-storey fishermen’s houses with boat storage below and brightly painted doors. Parking by the seafront is difficult and sunset is busy, so arrive early and book restaurants well ahead.

Nearby, near Trypiti, the Catacombs are early Christian burial galleries cut into volcanic rock, in use from the 1st to the 5th century AD, with tombs carved into the walls. The ancient theatre lies about 200 m to the west, so visit the two together.

On the north shore, Sarakiniko is a small white-sand cove between bone-white volcanic rock that wind and waves have carved into smooth, moon-like shapes. Walk the pale slabs for the best views, and wear shoes with grip, since the rock gets hot and slippery. Kleftiko, a bay of white cliffs, arches and sea caves, is reachable only by boat; join a morning cruise from Adamas for calmer seas.

Finish on Folegandros, a short ferry hop away. Chora is a whitewashed clifftop capital with a medieval kastro from 1212, three linked squares and the Panagia church on a rocky height. The centre is car-free; walk the path from Pounta Square up to the church for sunset views. Narrow island roads and ferry booking make a large motorhome impractical here.
