Route description

Santorini is an island, so you need a ferry or a flight; check the current timetable, services are thinner outside summer, and book vehicle space early if you bring a motorhome. Begin in the south at Akrotiri, a Bronze Age town buried by the volcanic eruption of the 16th century BCE, with multi-storey buildings and well-preserved frescoes. Excavations began in 1967, and a path links the village with the site’s parking area.

Nearby, Red Beach has red and black volcanic sand beneath iron-stained cliffs. The area is prone to landslides and parts of the beach have been inaccessible since 2013, so check the current access situation locally and keep away from the cliff base. Next head east to Kamari, a short drive across the island.

Above Kamari, Ancient Thera is a Hellenistic and Roman hilltop city on Mesa Vouno, about 369 m above the sea, with an agora, theatre and temples. Reach it by a winding 3 km road or by footpaths from Kamari; wear sturdy shoes, bring water and allow two to three hours. The hairpin road suits small vehicles better than large motorhomes.

Finish in the north with the walk from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia, roughly 10 km along the caldera rim. The second half is loose volcanic dirt with no shade, so wear proper walking shoes, start early in summer and walk from Fira towards Oia. Oia’s lanes are narrow and congested in season; allow extra time and head for the castle ruins at sunset.
