Zamość Old Town

Zamość, Poland

History

A planned Renaissance town in south-east Poland, with a grand market square, arcaded houses and a town hall with a curved double stair. Walk the old fortifications at sunset and park near the ramparts.

Zamość in south-eastern Poland was founded in 1580 by Grand Chancellor Jan Zamoyski as an "ideal city" based on the principles of the Italian Renaissance. The architect Bernardo Morando, who came from Padua, planned it on the image of a body: the Zamoyski palace formed the "head" and Grodzka Street the "backbone". The Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 as a unique example of a Renaissance town in Central Europe, and it preserves its street grid and fortifications.

The Great Market Square measures about 100 by 100 m, is lined with arcaded houses and is dominated by the Town Hall. The cathedral (1587 to 1598) and the colourful Armenian merchants' houses are worth seeing. The Zamoyski Academy was founded in 1594. Allow half a day for the square and the ramparts. A walk along the fortifications is especially atmospheric in the evening; park near the ramparts and go on foot.
