Yale University Campus

New Haven, CT

History

A Gothic-revival campus around Old Campus and Beinecke Plaza, with courtyards, a library tower and several museums close by. Walk it on a weekday for the lively feel, and park in a garage downtown rather than on the street.

Yale was founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School and moved to New Haven in 1716. The Collegiate Gothic buildings went up between 1917 and 1931, largely with money from Edward S. Harkness; they include the 216-foot (66 m) Harkness Tower. The Beinecke Rare Book Library, by Gordon Bunshaft, has wall panels of translucent Vermont marble. The university's libraries hold more than 15 million volumes.

Several museums are nearby: the Yale University Art Gallery, the first university art museum in the United States, the Yale Center for British Art and the Peabody Museum of Natural History. Allow two to three hours for the campus itself, more with the museums. Information on tours is available from the university's visitor center; if possible, park in a parking garage.
