Veszprém Castle District
Veszprém, Hungary
A narrow ridge of Baroque houses and a cathedral at the heart of a hilltop old town, with views over the valley and the Bakony hills. Park below the ridge and walk up the lane to Heroes' Gate.
Veszprém's Castle District lies on Castle Hill, one of the town's seven hills. The castle was built in the 10th and 11th centuries; today it is not a single building but an entire old-town quarter. Its landmarks include the Heroes' Gate (Hősök kapuja) as the main entrance, the Fire Tower, which originally protected the gate and offers all-round views, and St Michael's Cathedral, which stands on the country's oldest episcopal church and goes back to Queen Gisela. The Franciscan church dates from 1730, and St George's Chapel is regarded as probably the oldest medieval building.
Galleries, the castle fountain, Trinity Square and the Archbishop's Palace can be linked on a stroll along Vár utca. Entry to the district is free; according to the local tourist information, Vár utca has been open to visitors outside working hours since February 2024 (weekdays from 5 pm to 6 am, all day at weekends and on public holidays) (as of October 2026). Leave your vehicle below the ridge and walk up to the Heroes' Gate.
