Nature

Rounded granite outcrops and boulder piles in a pine landscape between Laramie and Cheyenne, popular for scrambling and short hikes. Stop from I-80 and walk the Turtle Rock loop; wear shoes with good grip.

Vedauwoo lies in Medicine Bow National Forest near Interstate 80, east of Laramie. The rocks are made of Sherman Granite about 1.4 billion years old, which erosion continues to shape. The name comes from the Arapaho word “bito’o’wu,” meaning “earth-born.”

There are picnic areas, a campground and hiking trails. Vedauwoo is famous among climbers, especially for crack climbing. A walk, for example on the Turtle Rock Loop of about 3 miles (5 km), takes two to three hours; sturdy shoes with good grip are important. Access is via Exit 329 on I-80. Bring drinking water and fill up on gas in Laramie. With luck you may see wildlife such as deer.
