Vasa Museum

Stockholm, Sweden

History

A museum built around an almost fully preserved 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage and was raised from the harbour. The hull is huge and best seen from several decks; allow two hours and come early in summer.

The Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in Stockholm harbour on 10 August 1628, after about 1,300 metres. Raised 333 years later, on 24 April 1961, the ship had a largely intact hull. The museum on the island of Djurgården is billed as home to the world's only preserved 17th-century ship and opened in 1990; until then the ship was housed provisionally. Including the bowsprit, the ship is about 69 metres long, the mainmast rose 52.5 metres above the keel, and 64 guns were on board.

There is a free audio guide for your own smartphone, a restaurant and a museum shop; large bags and suitcases are not allowed. Allow about two hours for a visit. The museum is among the most visited in Scandinavia, so come as early in the day as you can.
