Vadstena Castle
Vadstena, Sweden
A Renaissance castle surrounded by a moat on the shore of Lake Vättern, begun in the 16th century. Combine it with a stroll through Vadstena's small town centre and the abbey church.
King Gustav I Vasa had Vadstena Castle on Lake Vättern built from 1545 as a fortress. It originally consisted of three stone buildings facing the lake, ramparts, a courtyard, a moat and four round cannon turrets. In 1552 the king married Katarina Stenbock here. In the 1550s Prince Magnus converted the fortress into a residential palace, and all the Vasa kings had contributed to it by 1620. It is regarded as one of Sweden's finest Renaissance castles.
Today the castle houses the provincial archives, a castle museum with furniture and art, and the Vadstena Academy, described as Sweden's smallest opera house. Allow about two hours for the castle and its surroundings. From here you can continue with a stroll through Vadstena's old town.
