Tablas de Daimiel

Daimiel, Spain

Nature

A national park of shallow wetlands in the middle of La Mancha, home to many waterbirds. Wooden walkways and observation hides allow close views; come at dawn or dusk.

Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park was created in 1973 and, at roughly 3,030 ha, is the smallest of Spain’s national parks. The wetland lies in the province of Ciudad Real, where the Guadiana meets its tributary the Gigüela. The Guadiana brings fresh water, while the Gigüela is brackish. It is regarded as the last surviving floodplain wetland of its kind in the arid centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Water extraction caused water levels to fall sharply, and in 2008 and 2009 the area was badly damaged, partly by peat fires. Restoration measures have been under way since.

Wooden boardwalks lead across the water, and several observation hides give views of mallards, red-crested pochards, shovelers, black-winged stilts and little egrets. Otters also live here. The park authority names late September to mid-May as the best time to visit. Morning and evening are good for birdwatching, and you should allow two to three hours.
