Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer

Grand Island, NE

History

An open-air museum with a re-created railroad town of relocated and rebuilt prairie buildings, plus indoor exhibits on settlement. Plan a few hours and visit when the outdoor village is staffed, usually in the warmer months.

The Stuhr Museum in Grand Island covers about 83 ha (206 acres) with more than 100 structures. It opened in 1967. The Stuhr Building was designed by Edward Durell Stone and underwent a renovation costing about $7 million. The living-history village of Railroad Town shows life in the 1890s with costumed interpreters. There are also exhibits on history and art, including cowboy and Native American artifacts in the Gus Fonner Memorial Rotunda.

Railroad Town is open from May 1 through Labor Day (as of October 2026); the Stuhr Building and the rotunda are open year-round, according to the museum. Allow several hours for your visit and come in the summer season, when the village is lively. Check current hours in advance.
