At 2,757 m, the Stelvio Pass is Italy's highest paved mountain pass. Austria had the road built between 1820 and 1825 under the direction of Carlo Donegani; in the summer months up to 2,000 people worked on it at once. The eastern ramp from Prato allo Stelvio via Trafoi is 27.5 km long with 48 numbered hairpins, while the western ramp down to Bormio is 21.7 km with 34 bends. At 2,503 m the road from the Umbrail Pass joins from the west.
Allow half a day for the crossing with photo stops and a break at the top. The road, paved throughout, is usually open from late May into the autumn, depending on snow. In summer traffic is heavy, including cyclists and motorcyclists; the pass regularly features in the Giro d'Italia. On the annual Stelvio Bike Day in late summer the road is closed to all motor vehicles. Take your time on the tight hairpins.
