St. Wolfgang

St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Austria

History

A lakeside village on the Wolfgangsee, with a pilgrimage church that holds a famous carved altar and a harbour for lake boats. Come early in summer, as parking in the village is tight, and take a boat to see the shoreline.

St Wolfgang lies on the Wolfgangsee at 548 m above sea level in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut. In the 13th to 15th centuries the village was an important place of pilgrimage in honour of Saint Wolfgang. It originally belonged to Bavaria and passed to Austria in 1506. The late Gothic pilgrimage church contains the winged altarpiece by Michael Pacher (1471 to 1481), regarded as the most important Gothic winged altar in Central Europe, as well as Baroque works by Thomas Schwanthaler.

The "White Horse Inn" hotel inspired Ralph Benatzky's operetta of the same name from 1930. The Schafberg Railway, a rack railway, also departs from here and climbs the Schafberg. In summer come early, as parking in the village can be scarce. Allow about one to two hours for the church and a stroll through the village, plus a boat trip on the lake if you wish.
