Soglio

Soglio, Switzerland

History

A stone village on a sunny terrace in Val Bregaglia, with narrow lanes, chestnut groves and a view across to the Bondasca peaks. The road up is narrow with passing places, and the village centre is for walking only.

Soglio sits at 1,090 m on a sunny terrace in the Italian-speaking Bergell (Val Bregaglia). The village is a tight cluster of stone and timber houses, and the von Salis family built several palaces here, among them Casa Alta (1524, remodelled in 1680), Casa Battista of 1630, now the Hotel Palazzo Salis, and Casa Antonio of 1763 to 1766. Guests at Casa Battista included Giovanni Segantini and Rainer Maria Rilke; Segantini is said to have called the village the "threshold of paradise". From the village you look into the Bondasca valley towards the granite peaks of the Sciora group, including Piz Badile and Piz Cengalo.

Allow one to two hours for a stroll through the lanes. If you want to stay longer, the Via Bregaglia leads through woods and meadows to Stampa. If you drive, arrive early in summer, as parking is limited; alternatively, a PostBus runs from Promontogno.
