Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille
Sandpoint, ID
A lakeside town on Lake Pend Oreille, a very large, deep lake in the Idaho Panhandle, with a small walkable centre and a city beach. Walk out on the long dock at City Beach in summer and look across to the Selkirk Mountains.
Lake Pend Oreille is the largest lake in Idaho: it is about 43 miles (69 km) long and roughly 1,150 feet (350 m) deep, making it one of the five deepest lakes in the United States. Ice Age glaciers carved it out, and today it lies among mountain ranges such as the Selkirk and Cabinet Mountains. Sandpoint is the hub on the lake, and U.S. Highway 95 crosses the water on the Long Bridge.
Plan on half a day to a full day: stroll through the small downtown and, in summer, head to City Beach on the lakeshore. Sandpoint is Idaho’s only Amtrak stop and is easy to reach on US 95 and US 2. At the south end of the lake lies Farragut State Park, a Navy training camp during World War II.
