Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, France

History

A medieval village clinging to a limestone cliff high above the Lot river, with ochre roofs and artisans' workshops. Park below and walk up; the lanes are steep and uneven.

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie lies in the Lot département, about 30 km by road east of Cahors, on a steep rock some 100 m above the River Lot. The village was the principal seat of one of the four viscounties of Quercy and belonged to the Lapopie family. It is one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" and lies on the Way of St James. The painter Henri Martin discovered it for himself, and other artists followed; the Surrealist André Breton spent long periods here in the 1950s.

After a television vote in 2012, visitor numbers rose sharply, and today around 400,000 people come each year to a village of just over 200 inhabitants. Arrive early in the day or outside the holiday season. Allow one to two hours for a walk through the steep lanes and wear sturdy shoes. It is better to leave vehicles, motorhomes included, below the village and walk up.
