The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands for art and history. It was founded in The Hague in 1798, moved to Amsterdam in 1808 and took over the Trippenhuis in 1817. The present main building by Pierre Cuypers, which combines Gothic and Renaissance elements, opened in 1885. It underwent extensive renovation from the end of 2003, and Queen Beatrix reopened it on 13 April 2013.

The collection comprises about one million objects from the period 1200 to 2000, of which around 8,000 are on display. The best-known works include Rembrandt's Night Watch as well as paintings by Vermeer and Frans Hals. A cycle tunnel runs through the ground floor. Get a timed-entry ticket in advance and head first for the Gallery of Honour. For a first overview, allow at least two to three hours.
