Reid State Park
Georgetown, ME
A coastal state park with long sandy beaches, rocky headlands and dunes on a Maine island reached by road. Walk the beach at low tide, and note that the Atlantic water stays cold even in summer.
Reid State Park is on Georgetown Island and covers about 770 acres (about 312 ha). Walter E. Reid, who came from Georgetown, donated the land to the state in 1946. The park is known for its sandy beaches and dunes, which are rare in Maine, and also for tide pools, salt marshes and a tidal lagoon.
Mile Beach and Half Mile Beach are used for ocean swimming; the lagoon's calmer water is noticeably warmer, according to the park. Endangered least terns and piping plovers nest on the beaches, so stay out of the marked nesting areas. You can easily plan half a day to a full day for a beach walk, the rocks and the lagoon. The Atlantic stays cold; low tide is a good time to explore the rocks.
