Plitvička jezera
Rakovica, Croatia
Sixteen terraced lakes joined by waterfalls and boardwalks. Buy tickets online in summer.
Plitvice Lakes National Park has 16 lakes arranged in cascades and held back by barriers of travertine. The upper lakes sit on dolomite and the lower lakes on limestone. The largest waterfall, Veliki Slap, is 78 m high. The barriers grow by up to 13 mm a year. The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and swimming has been banned since 2006.
There are two main entrances: Entrance 1 is closer to the lower lakes and Veliki Slap, while Entrance 2 is closer to the upper lakes and is closed in winter. Plan a full day for a good impression; the marked routes are 3.5 to 17.5 km long. Book tickets online in advance, as visitor numbers are limited. You will find fewer crowds if you start early in the morning or visit outside July and August. Drones are not allowed. Parking at both entrances is paid in the season.
