Peñón de Ifach
Calp, Spain
A steep limestone rock rising straight from the Mediterranean, protected as a natural park. A footpath climbs through a short tunnel to a viewpoint; go in the morning and wear proper shoes.
The Peñón de Ifach is a 332 m limestone rock that rises from the Mediterranean at Calpe and is joined to the mainland only by a narrow isthmus. It has been a natural park since 1987. There was an Iberian settlement on the rock in the 4th century BC and a medieval settlement in the 13th century. The park is home to more than 300 plant species and around 80 bird species, including Eleonora’s falcons and cormorants. On a clear day the view from the summit stretches as far as Ibiza.
The path to the summit passes through a 30 m tunnel cut into the rock in 1918 and becomes narrower beyond it. Wear sturdy shoes and go in the morning if you can. According to the Calpe town council, an advance booking is required to visit (as of October 2026). Check the council’s website beforehand for the current procedure.
