Pedraza

Pedraza, Spain

History

A walled medieval village on a rocky outcrop, with a stone-arched gate, an arcaded main square and a castle. Cars stay outside the walls; it is a popular day trip from Madrid, so visit on a weekday if you can.

Pedraza, in the province of Segovia, was declared a national monument complex (Conjunto Monumental) in 1951 and is regarded as an outstanding medieval townscape. You enter the town through the Puerta de la Villa and arrive at the Plaza Mayor, one of the finest squares in the region. The castle tower houses the museum of the painter Ignacio Zuloaga. Also worth seeing are the medieval prison, the Cárcel de la Villa, and the church of San Juan. The streets are cobbled and lined with houses bearing noble coats of arms.

Allow about two hours for the town. If you want to walk in peace, come on a weekday or in the morning. Sturdy shoes are sensible because of the cobbles.
