Ocracoke Village

Ocracoke, NC

History

A small village on an island reached by ferry, with a lighthouse, a working harbour and quiet beaches. Allow time for the ferry crossing, and book or queue early in peak summer.

Ocracoke lies on an island in the Outer Banks and can be reached with a vehicle only by ferry. A free ferry runs from Hatteras Island; ferries with a fee connect to Swan Quarter on the mainland and to Cedar Island. A single paved road, NC 12, leads from the ferry landing in the northeast to the village at the southwest end of the island. The island lies on average only about 3.3 feet (1 m) above sea level.

Ocracoke Light, built in 1823, has been in continuous operation ever since and stands near the harbor at Silver Lake. On 22 November 1718 the pirate Blackbeard was killed here in a battle with troops from Virginia. Apart from the village and a few other areas, the island belongs to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Build the crossing into your schedule and check the current ferry timetables beforehand, especially in summer.
