Nafplio Old Town

Nafplio, Greece

History

A harbour town of Venetian and neoclassical houses, bougainvillea and car-free lanes around Syntagma Square. Park near the waterfront, wander on foot and stay for an evening stroll along the seafront.

Nafplio, on the coast of the Argolid, was the first capital of modern Greece until 1834. Ioannis Kapodistrias arrived here in January 1828 and made the town the seat of government in 1829; in 1834 King Otto moved the capital to Athens. Venice acquired Nafplio in 1388 and expanded and fortified the town, including Acronauplia; the Ottomans took it in 1540. The Palamidi fortress was built by the Venetians between 1711 and 1714.

The old town has kept its Venetian character. The fortresses of Palamidi and Acronauplia rise above it, and the island fortress of Bourtzi sits in the harbour. The lanes are easy to explore on foot; allow half a day to a full day for the old town, more if you visit the fortresses. Evenings by the water and in the lanes are usually more pleasant than the midday heat. Park on the edge of the old town and continue on foot.
