Mystic Seaport Museum
Mystic, CT
A re-created 19th-century maritime village on the Mystic River, with tall ships, a shipyard and workshops where crafts are still demonstrated. Allow several hours and look at the seasonal schedule for boarding and demonstrations.
Mystic Seaport Museum was founded in 1929 and spreads across 19 acres (almost 8 ha) along the Mystic River. It features a recreated 19th-century seafaring village and holds more than 650 historic watercraft. The best known is the whaleship Charles W. Morgan of 1841, which the museum describes as the oldest commercial ship still in existence in the United States. Work on vessels really is done in the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard.
The grounds also include a research center with more than two million artifacts, a library of 75,000 volumes and the Treworgy Planetarium. Sail training is offered aboard the 1931 schooner Brilliant. Allow several hours for a visit, ideally half a day to a full day. According to the museum it is open daily (as of October 2026); demonstrations and boat rides vary by season, so check the website beforehand.
