Mussenden Temple

Castlerock, United Kingdom

Views

A small round library perched on a cliff edge above the Atlantic, in the grounds of the ruined Downhill estate, with Benone Strand stretching away below. Windy and exposed, so bring a jacket even on a sunny day.

Mussenden Temple stands on a clifftop in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, high above the Atlantic. Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry, had the circular building erected in 1785 as a summer library and dedicated it to the memory of his cousin Frideswide Mussenden. It was modelled on the Temple of Vesta at Tivoli, and Bramante's Tempietto in Rome is also cited as an influence. Because the cliff is eroding, the National Trust stabilised it in 1997.

The grounds of Downhill Demesne are open all year according to Wikipedia, with seasonal opening hours. The interior of the temple is not accessible (as of October 2026), so it is best admired from outside, and there are coastal walks nearby. As the cliff is eroding, keep well back from the edge. A parking charge applies (as of October 2026); the sources gave no information on motorhomes.
