Mummelsee

Seebach, Germany

Nature

A dark lake in the pines right beside the Black Forest High Road, with pedal boats and a legend of water nymphs.

The Mummelsee lies at just over 1,000 m on the western slope of the Hornisgrinde, right beside the Black Forest High Road (B 500), about 25 km from Baden-Baden. This cirque lake was formed in the Würm glaciation, and its shoreline measures around 800 m. The water looks very dark, partly because of humic substances from the nearby raised bog; it is also highly acidic, so no fish can live in it. The name probably comes from "Mummeln", a dialect word for water lilies. Legend has it that nixies and the Mummelsee King live in the lake; Eduard Mörike dedicated his poem "Die Geister am Mummelsee" to them, and Grimmelshausen set an episode of "Simplicissimus" here.

On the shore there is a hotel with a restaurant and pedal boat hire. The summit of the Hornisgrinde (1,163 m) is about 1.5 km away on foot, and the Westweg long-distance trail also passes this way. On fine weekends it is often very crowded.
