Muckross House and Gardens
Killarney, Ireland
A Victorian mansion on the shore of Muckross Lake in Killarney National Park, with period rooms and formal gardens. Allow time for a stroll to Torc Waterfall nearby and bring a rain jacket, since the weather changes quickly.
Muckross House, a Tudor-style mansion with 65 rooms, was built in the 1840s for Henry Arthur Herbert. The estate was lavishly prepared for Queen Victoria's visit in 1861. In 1899 Lord Ardilaun (Arthur Guinness) bought the property; from 1911 it belonged to the Californian William Bowers Bourn, who, together with his family, gave it to the Irish state in 1932. This became Ireland's first national park, today's Killarney National Park.
The grounds include gardens and the Muckross Traditional Farms, which show rural life of earlier times. You can reach Muckross Abbey on foot in about 20 minutes, and Torc Waterfall is only a short drive away. The estate lies about 6 km from Killarney and has car parking. Allow half a day to a full day and pack rain gear.
