A tidal island crowned by an abbey. Park on the mainland and take the free shuttle across the causeway.
Mont-Saint-Michel is a rock 92 m high with a circumference of around 960 m. According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranches in 708 and told him to build a church. The abbey has Romanesque parts from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the Gothic wing known as La Merveille was built after a fire in 1204. Since 1979 the mount and its bay have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tidal range reaches about 14 m, and at exceptionally high tides the mount briefly becomes an island.
The visitor car parks are on the mainland, about 2.5 km away. The shuttle, Le Passeur, is free; on foot it takes around 45 minutes. The village is open at all times, while the abbey requires a ticket and you should allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Expect steep lanes, many steps and uneven cobblestones.
