Monsanto boulder village

Monsanto, Portugal

Oddities

Houses squeezed between and under enormous granite boulders on a hilltop near the Spanish border.

Monsanto lies in the Beira Baixa at an altitude of about 758 m, where huge granite boulders shape the village. Some houses are built between the rocks, and in a few a boulder serves as the roof. In 1938 the village won a national competition for the title “most Portuguese village in Portugal”, and in 1995 it joined the network of Historic Villages of Portugal. Sights include the ruined Templar castle (a national monument since 1948), the parish church, Igreja Matriz, with its Romanesque portal and Manueline elements, and the viewpoint at Praça dos Canhões.

Allow two to three hours for a walk round the village and the climb to the castle; sturdy shoes are advisable. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; the festival “Festa da Divina Santa Cruz” takes place around 3 May. You can park at the Praça dos Canhões viewpoint at the village entrance.
