Mogoșoaia Palace

Mogoșoaia, Romania

History

A Brâncoveanu-style palace with pale walls and an open loggia, set beside a lake in a park just north of Bucharest. An easy half-day outing; the grounds are good for a walk after the visit.

Mogoșoaia Palace stands about 10 km from Bucharest on the shore of a lake. Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu had it built between 1698 and 1702. The building combines Renaissance and Baroque elements; its most striking feature is the Venetian-style loggia with three arches on the upper floor, looking out over the water. In the 18th century the Ottomans destroyed parts of its decoration. The palace later belonged to the Bibescu family, was nationalised after 1945 and has been a museum since 1957.

The estate includes an English-style park with Italian-style gardens, the St George Chapel of 1688 and the Bibescu family vault, where Elisabeth Bibesco is buried. Allow half a day for the palace and park. It is best to check opening times and access to the interior in advance; the park is also pleasant for a stroll.
