A high viewpoint on the road between Arriondas and Colunga, with a wide view over the Asturian coast on one side and the Picos de Europa on the other. Drive up on a clear day; fog often fills the valley.
The Mirador del Fito (Asturian “Fitu”) stands at 597 metres in the Sierra del Sueve, on the AS-260 road between Arriondas and Colunga, about 11 kilometres from each. The viewing platform, inaugurated in 1927, looks like a flying saucer hovering above the ground; locals call it “el cazu” (the bowl). It was built as a community project by local people.
In clear weather the panorama takes in the Sueve nature reserve, the Ponga Natural Park and the Picos de Europa National Park, as far as the coast, from Ribadesella to Villaviciosa. There is a car park nearby. A hiking trail also leads from here to Picu Pienzu (around 1,150 metres), one of the peaks closest to the sea in Spain; allow about five hours for the round trip. Go up on a clear day, because in fog the view is hidden.
