Mark Twain House
Hartford, CT
The ornate Victorian home in Hartford where the author lived and wrote some of his best-known books, visited on a guided tour. Reserve a tour slot in advance for busy periods and pair it with the neighboring Harriet Beecher Stowe house.
The Mark Twain House at 351 Farmington Avenue in Hartford was completed in 1874 to designs by Edward Tuckerman Potter, in the Victorian Gothic style. The biographer Justin Kaplan described it as "part steamboat, part medieval fortress and part cuckoo clock". Samuel Clemens lived here with his family from 1874 to 1891 and wrote, among other works, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Life on the Mississippi. In 1881 Louis Comfort Tiffany designed parts of the interior.
The house was saved from demolition in 1929 and restored from 1955 to 1974. Today the museum holds about 50,000 objects, including original furniture and Tiffany glass. It can be visited only on a guided tour; a visitor center opened in 2003. Allow about one to two hours, and book ahead at busy times.
