Manarola

Manarola, Italy

History

Pastel houses stacked on a dark rock above a tiny harbour, with terraced vineyards climbing the hillside behind. Park outside the village and walk down, and come near sunset for the classic view from the path east of the harbour.

Manarola is one of the smallest villages of the Cinque Terre, with around 350 inhabitants. The foundation stone of the church of San Lorenzo is dated to 1338, which is why the village may be the oldest of the five. The houses climb steeply alongside a covered stream, linked by narrow lanes. Vineyard terraces shape the slopes around the village, and the Sciacchetrà wine is famous. The little harbour is considered the most photographed spot in the Cinque Terre.

Paved paths lead to viewpoints for panoramas and sunsets, for example at Punta Bonfiglio. The village has a station on the Genoa–Pisa line, and the national park advises leaving your car in the upper car parks and using the shuttle buses. The coastal path known as the Via dell'Amore to Riomaggiore reopened in February 2025 after a long closure; access is paid and by reservation only (as of February 2025). Check the current conditions before your visit.
