Lititz

Lititz, PA

History

A tidy Lancaster County town founded by Moravians, with a tree-lined main street, old stone buildings and a pretzel bakery with tours. Walk Main Street and the small park at the spring.

Moravian Brethren founded Lititz in 1756; the name goes back to Litice Castle in Bohemia. For a long time the town was reserved for members of the Moravian congregation, and outsiders were only later allowed to settle permanently. Lititz is home to Linden Hall (founded 1746), the oldest girls' boarding school in the United States, and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery (1861), regarded as the country's oldest commercial pretzel bakery. There is also the Wilbur Chocolate Factory with the Candy Americana Museum, and Lititz Springs Park.

The town of about 9,400 residents lies roughly 14 km (9 miles) north of Lancaster. Two to three hours is enough for a stroll along Main Street, through the park and to the small producers. Park in the town center and explore on foot.
