Liberty State Park
Jersey City, NJ
A waterfront park facing the Statue of Liberty and the Lower Manhattan skyline, with a promenade, restored railroad terminal and ferry dock. Come late afternoon for the skyline light; walk the promenade for the best photos.
Liberty State Park in Jersey City covers 1,212 acres (about 490 ha) on Upper New York Bay, opposite Liberty Island and Ellis Island. It opened in 1976 and draws about 4.5 million visitors a year. An estimated 10.5 million immigrants passed through the Central Railroad of New Jersey terminal of 1889, now a museum and ferry ticket office. The Liberty Walkway is an arc-shaped waterfront promenade linking the main points of interest.
The park is also home to the Liberty Science Center and "Empty Sky", the state's official September 11 memorial, dedicated on September 10, 2011. A 36-acre (15 ha) nature preserve includes salt marshes. Since 2023 a contaminated area of about 240 acres (97 ha), previously closed, has been undergoing remediation (as of October 2026). Allow one to two hours.
