Lanesboro

Lanesboro, MN

History

A small river town tucked into the bluffs of the Root River valley, with a walkable main street of brick storefronts. The paved Root River State Trail runs right through town, so rent a bike and ride a stretch of the old railbed.

Lanesboro in southeastern Minnesota was platted in 1868 and has around 700 residents. The South Branch of the Root River flows through town, and across from Sylvan Park it drops over a dam as a small waterfall. Much of downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Root River State Trail runs through Lanesboro and is the main draw for cyclists.

The town itself offers a surprisingly rich cultural scene, with the Commonweal Theatre, a professional company since 1989, performing in a new building that opened in 2007. Saturdays from May to October, the farmers market takes place in Sylvan Park, and several festivals are held there each year. Allow half a day for the town and a bike stage. The area is especially appealing in fall, and the town is busier on festival weekends.
