Kremnica
Kremnica, Slovakia
A former gold-mining town whose castle complex with a Gothic church rises above a quiet square, and whose mint has been striking coins for centuries. Allow an hour for the castle walls and a walk through the lanes below.
Kremnica lies at an altitude of 564 m in the Kremnica Mountains, about 20 km west of Banská Bystrica. In 1328 Charles I of Hungary granted the settlement royal town status, and from 1335 gold florins were minted at the Kremnica Mint. Kremnica ducats became an internationally used means of payment. Gold mining ended in 1970. Today the town has around 4,600 inhabitants.
The townscape is shaped by the castle complex of the 13th to 15th centuries with the Gothic Church of St Catherine, which hosts a European organ festival, and by the Baroque plague column on the main square. A roughly 20 km aqueduct built in the 15th century still supplies three hydroelectric power plants. Allow about one to two hours for the castle walls and lanes. Check the opening times of the mint museum and the castle in advance.
