Kőszeg Old Town

Kőszeg, Hungary

History

A well-preserved border town with a small castle, a colourful main square and narrow lanes, set at the foot of the Kőszeg hills. Visit in the morning, then take a short walk into the woods above the town.

Kőszeg lies in western Hungary near the Austrian border. The town was founded in the 13th century by the Kőszegi family and became a royal free town in 1328. In 1532 a garrison of only 700 to 800 men withstood an Ottoman army of more than 100,000 soldiers; in remembrance, the town's church clocks have shown 11 o'clock since 1777. By common account the old town has the oldest town hall in Hungary.

Sights include Jurisics Castle with its castle museum, the Church of the Sacred Heart on the main square and the Heroes' Tower. The hills around the town invite walks, for example to the Seven Springs (Hétforrás). Allow half a day. Park on the edge of the old town and go on foot.
