Kinsale

Kinsale, Ireland

History

A colourful harbour town of narrow lanes, galleries and seafood kitchens on the Bandon estuary. Park at the harbour or the pier car park and explore on foot, ideally in the late afternoon when the day-trippers have left.

Kinsale lies about 25 kilometres south of Cork at the mouth of the River Bandon. The harbour was of strategic importance: in 1601 English forces under Lord Mountjoy defeated a Spanish-Irish army here. Several buildings survive from that and later periods, including St Multose Church (1190), Desmond Castle (around 1500, also known as the “French Prison”), the pentagonal James Fort (completed by 1607) and the star-shaped Charles Fort of 1677 in nearby Summercove.

Kinsale is known for its food and hosts annual food events, such as a gourmet festival in October and a chowder competition in April; expect more visitors during those weeks. Allow at least half a day for the town centre and Charles Fort. Motorhome drivers should check parking in advance, as space in the centre can be limited. Bus Éireann links the town with Cork, and most services also stop at Cork Airport.
