Kīlauea caldera

Volcano, HI

Nature

The summit of one of the world’s most active volcanoes, with steam vents and lava fields along Crater Rim Drive.

The summit of Kīlauea lies at an elevation of 1,222 m (4,009 feet) on the island of Hawaiʻi. The basalt shield volcano is among the most active on Earth. Its summit caldera is called Kaluapele, and the crater Halemaʻumaʻu long contained persistent vents. In 2018 the crater floor collapsed dramatically, and the crater grew larger and deeper. Since December 23, 2024, eruptions have again taken place in the summit crater; they come in separate episodes with pauses of days or weeks and stay within the national park. Episode 54 ended on August 25, 2026; since then there has been a pause, with another episode still possible (as of October 2026).

Overlooks along Crater Rim Drive in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, such as Uēkahuna, Kūpinaʻi Pali or Kīlauea Overlook near the steam vents, offer views into the caldera. Arrive early, as parking lots are often full by about 10 a.m. Bring a headlamp, sturdy shoes, warm clothing and a dust mask. Before you go, check the webcams, the daily USGS update and the air quality. Heed closure signs: volcanic gases and unstable crater edges are real hazards.
