Jacksonville Historic District
Jacksonville, OR
A gold-rush town whose main street keeps its brick and wood-fronted buildings from the nineteenth century. Walk the centre at an easy pace, then add the woodland trails just outside town if you want some greenery.
Jacksonville grew up after the gold discoveries of 1851-52 in the area and was the seat of Jackson County from 1853 until Medford took over in 1927. When the railroad bypassed the town in 1884, it lost importance, which saved its 19th-century buildings from demolition. The historic district was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and is considered one of the best-preserved mining and commercial towns in the West.
Highlights include the Beekman House and the Beekman Native Plant Arboretum; Oregon's first Chinatown also stood here. The Britt Festival concerts take place in summer, on a site chosen in 1963 for its natural acoustics. A stroll through the center takes one to two hours. The town has about 3,000 residents.
