Iseltwald

Iseltwald, Switzerland

History

A quiet village on a small peninsula on the south shore of Lake Brienz, with a lakeside castle and a short path along the water. Come outside midday to find parking and a calmer shore, and bring a swimsuit in summer.

Iseltwald lies on the left shore of Lake Brienz. As early as 1146, King Conrad III granted a quarter of the village and half the forest to the Augustinian priory of Interlaken; after the monastery was dissolved in 1528, the area came under Bernese rule. For a long time people lived from fishing, fruit growing, livestock and alpine farming, and a glassworks operated from 1680 to 1715. Tourism has shaped the village since the 1870s.

The village walk is about 3.1 km long, easy, and takes around an hour. It passes the Mülibach waterfall, a viewpoint overlooking Seeburg and the "Snail Island"; along the shore, a lido with a bistro and several restaurant terraces invite a break. If you drive, leave the A8 at the Iseltwald exit. Alternatively, bus 103 runs from Interlaken Ost, and in summer boats sail from Interlaken Ost or Brienz.
