Holašovice Historic Village

Holašovice, Czechia

History

A South Bohemian village around a wide green, lined with farmhouses in rural Baroque style with decorated gables. Park at the edge and walk the square; it is a quiet place best visited in soft morning or evening light.

Holašovice in South Bohemia was first mentioned in 1263 and passed to a Cistercian monastery in 1292. A plague between 1520 and 1525 killed almost all the inhabitants, and the monastery then settled colonists from Bavaria and Austria. Today 23 farmsteads with about 120 buildings in all stand around the broad village green, their stucco gables facing the common. Most date mainly from the 19th century. The style is known as South Bohemian Folk Baroque. In 1998 UNESCO inscribed the village as a World Heritage Site for its exceptionally well-preserved layout.

After the Second World War the village fell into decay, and it has been restored since 1990. About 140 people live here today, so please be considerate. Besides the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk (1755), a walk around the green is worthwhile; one to two hours is enough.
