The Hoh Rain Forest on the west side of Olympic National Park gets more than 3,000 mm (120 inches) of precipitation in an average year. Sitka spruce and western hemlock dominate, some topping 90 m (300 ft), alongside western red cedar, Douglas fir and bigleaf maple, whose branches are thickly draped in moss. Two short loops start at the visitor center: the Hall of Mosses, about 1.3 km (0.8 mile) with roughly 30 m (100 ft) of elevation gain, and the Spruce Nature Trail at 1.9 km (1.2 miles).
The only way in is the Upper Hoh Road, a dead end about 29 km (18 miles) long from US Highway 101. From mid-June the parking lot often fills by around 10 a.m., and if you arrive between about 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. you may wait one to two hours at the entrance, so come early in the morning. Expect wet, muddy trails, and allow half a day to a full day for the drive and both loops.
