Gruyères Village and Castle

Gruyères, Switzerland

History

A walled medieval hilltop village above the pre-Alpine meadows, with a castle at its top and a single cobbled street lined with old houses. Park below the gate and walk up, ideally early or late in the day when the tour groups are gone.

Gruyères stands on an 82-metre hill at 810 metres above the Sarine valley in the canton of Fribourg. The village is first mentioned around 1138/39 and grew up below the castle of the Counts of Gruyère; by 1195/96 it was already a market town. The castle was built between 1270 and 1282 and is now a museum, with a Knights' Hall, frescoes and views of the Fribourg Pre-Alps. The village lanes are traffic-free and still feel medieval.

Besides the castle, the H. R. Giger Museum and the Tibet Museum are worth a visit, and nearby Pringy has a show dairy, as the village gave Gruyère cheese its name. Two to three hours are enough for the village and castle. Because the lanes are traffic-free, leave your vehicle outside and walk up. If you want to avoid the crowds, come early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
